kitchen_island    Consider kitchen island if you have the luxury of a large kitchen.  Kitchen island will not only make the most of all the space, it can also take the pressure off the wall bound units, giving you all the benefits of the perimeter kitchen without the rigid and enclosed wraparound look.  An island takes up a fair bit of floor space, so ensure that it is multi-purpose.  Use it for appliances extra work surface, even the kitchen sink.  For ultimate flexibility (but not if the island contains the cooker or sink), fit it with castors so you can wheel it to one side or if it is fixed, make it "float" by placing it on stilts or a pedestal.  If you do not have room for a kitchen island, buy a large mobile butcher's block, instead.

 

Advantages of kitchen island

  • Kitchen island make and effective partition between kitchen and dining area

  • Can accommodates everything from storage cupboards and the kitchen bin to cooker or even the sink.  Remember though, that  you will need to conceal plumbing and electrics in the legs of the unit and that the service pipes will need to run under the floor.

  • With four separate sides, an island can be used by several people at once making it both practical and sociable.

  • A floating island - one suspended from the ceiling - can work well in a smaller space though you need to check with structural engineer that your ceiling can take the extra weight.

  • Make the top overhang to create an eating area, but ensure there is space for chairs to be slotted underneath.
